Illinois Man Sentenced to 53 Years in ‍Hate Crime Killing of Palestinian Boy

JOLIET, ‍Ill. – Joseph Czuba, 73, was sentenced today to 53 years in prison for the October 2023 murder of Wadee Alfayoumi, ‍a 6-year-old Palestinian boy. A jury found czuba guilty of a⁣ hate crime in connection ⁤with the stabbing, which also severely injured the boy’s⁢ mother, according to local media⁣ reports.

Czuba will⁤ likely spend the‍ remainder of his life in prison. The crime occurred amid rising islamophobia following Hamas’s attacks on⁢ Israel.

Background to the Hate ⁢Crime

Czuba⁢ was the landlord of the home where Wadee Alfayoumi⁢ lived with his mother.According to the‍ mother, their relationship with ‍Czuba had been normal until the Hamas attacks. Afterward, Czuba allegedly began‍ pressuring them to leave, stating that Muslims⁤ were ⁢not welcome.

according to the chicago Tribune,‌ Czuba unexpectedly ​entered their home one day and began yelling. He allegedly‌ pushed the mother and stabbed her before she‍ coudl‌ escape to the ‌bathroom. Czuba⁣ then repeatedly stabbed Wadee,leaving‌ the ⁤knife⁣ in the child’s body.

Czuba’s wife has since⁣ divorced him and testified during the trial.

During ‌the sentencing hearing, Wadee’s grandfather, Mahmoud Yousef, addressed czuba directly.”We have to know. We deserve that Mr. Joseph explains ‌his act. A stab was not enough,” Yousef⁢ said, according to reports. He then implored ⁣Czuba to “say something!” but received no response.

Speaking to reporters⁢ outside the Will County ⁤Courthouse near Chicago, Yousef stated, “We certainly know that‌ this is linked to the war there. There are people who⁤ wont to bring war to this country,but you can’t do that.”
