PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — A man was taken to the hospital in stable condition after an overnight shooting in Providence.
According to a Providence Police spokesperson, officers were dispatched to Bodell Avenue at approximately 3:25 a.m. On Sunday, April 26, 2026, following reports of a shots fired incident and a vehicle that had crashed into a building.
Upon arrival, police found a vehicle that had struck the side of a housing structure and contained multiple bullet holes. A short time later, officers were dispatched to nearby Cleveland Street, where they located a man with a gunshot wound.
The man was transported by emergency medical personnel to Rhode Island Hospital and is currently in stable condition. Detectives with the Providence Police Department are investigating both the shooting and the vehicle crash as related incidents.
Multiple shell casings were recovered at the scene on Bodell Avenue, and the vehicle involved in the crash was found to have sustained significant damage from gunfire. The vehicle had struck an apartment building located at 300 Hartford Avenue, which is owned by the Providence Housing Authority.
Authorities confirmed that two vehicles were involved in the incident, though only one was found to have crashed into the building. The second vehicle was not located at the scene, and investigators are working to determine its involvement and the sequence of events leading up to the crash and shooting.
This marks the second shooting incident reported in Providence within a two-week span. On April 12, 2026, a man was shot multiple times near Whelan Road and transported to Rhode Island Hospital in critical condition. That incident remains under investigation by authorities.
In related developments, a section of an on-ramp from Route 10 north to Interstate 95 in Cranston collapsed on April 24, 2026, causing structural debris to fall onto active Amtrak train tracks. The incident prompted temporary suspension of rail service, though Amtrak has since reported partial resumption of operations following debris removal and track inspections.
