Details of the Arrest and Charges
A 51-year-old man, Tony Abbey, residing in Tullow, County Carlow, has been formally charged in connection with the seizure of approximately €3.02 million worth of suspected herbal cannabis. The seizure occurred on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at Rosslare Europort in County Wexford.
Mr. Abbey was apprehended following a search of a truck that had recently disembarked a ferry originating from Bilbao, Spain. Irish Customs officers conducted the search, leading to the discovery of 150.6 kilograms of the suspected controlled substance.
Court Appearance and bail Hearing
Mr. Abbey appeared before a special sitting of Gorey District Court on Monday,august 26,2024,facing two counts of drug possession. Detective Garda Stephen Burke provided evidence of arrest and formally charged Mr. Abbey.
During the hearing, Detective Burke voiced objections to granting bail, citing the severity of the charges and concerns that Mr. Abbey might attempt to flee the jurisdiction,given his profession as an international haulier regularly traveling between Ireland and Europe.
Bail Granted with Strict conditions
defense solicitor Chris Hogan argued that Mr. Abbey had fully cooperated with Customs officials during the search. Mr. Abbey himself assured the court he would comply with any conditions imposed if granted bail.
Judge Miriam Walsh ultimately granted bail, requiring an self-reliant surety of €40,000 and a personal surety of €20,000, with proof of funds from bank accounts. Additional conditions include twice-daily sign-ins at Tullow Garda Station, a curfew between 11:00 PM and 7:00 AM, provision of a mobile phone number, and a prohibition on applying for any travel documents.

Mr. Abbey was remanded in custody with consent to bail and is scheduled to appear before Wexford District Court on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.
