Columbus Police Department Investigates Nearly Two-Hour Response Delay
Columbus Department of Public Safety officials acknowledged that police officers were available to respond when the victim’s call was upgraded to a Priority 2 emergency run. However, officers were not dispatched until after the morning shift change, creating a delay of nearly two hours before law enforcement arrived at the apartment complex. The city has launched an investigation to determine why officers were not dispatched sooner, though public safety officials have not yet released additional details regarding that ongoing review.

During court proceedings, Bamba’s defense attorney informed a judge that Bamba was employed as a surgical technician at OhioHealth and had suffered a mental-health episode. The attorney stated that Bamba checked himself into a behavioral-health facility for a three-day stay following the Aug. 26 incidents. OhioHealth confirmed to reporters that Bamba was placed on leave from his position. According to court records, Bamba has since moved out of the Clintonville apartment complex where the encounters occurred.

City officials have not yet disclosed when the internal review regarding the police response delay will conclude, or whether any disciplinary actions will be taken against personnel involved in the dispatch failure.
