Philip Ormond, 45, has been sentenced to four years and three months in prison for causing the death of 84-year-old Kathleen Furlong in a hit-and-run incident in Tallaght, Dublin, in September 2023. Ormond pleaded guilty to hazardous driving causing death and failing to remain at the scene of the collision.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The incident occurred at approximately 11am on September 8, 2023, at the junction of Fortunestown Way and Cheeverstown Road in Tallaght.Ormond was driving at a speed of 78km/h in a bus lane when he ran a red light, striking ms. Furlong as she crossed the road.
Garda investigations revealed the red light had been active for eight seconds before Ormond drove through it, followed by a three-second amber phase. This indicated ample possibility for Ormond to stop. Despite briefly stopping after the impact, Ormond fled the scene upon seeing others rushing to assist Ms.furlong.
Victim Impact and Family Grief
Kathleen Furlong was a well-respected and beloved member of her community, remembered by her family and friends as a resilient and compassionate woman. She had previously battled cancer twice but remained patient and understanding.
In a deeply moving victim impact statement, the Furlong family described the “unbearable emptiness” left by their mother’s “violent and senseless” death. They highlighted the cruelty of being “mowed down” and left to die without assistance. The family condemned Ormond’s lack of “basic human decency,” stating he had effectively imposed a “death penalty” on their mother and a “life sentence” on themselves.
Court Proceedings and sentencing
Philip Ormond, of Deerpark Place, Kiltipper in Tallaght, entered guilty pleas for both dangerous driving causing death and failing to remain at the scene. Judge Martin Nolan acknowledged Ormond’s guilty pleas and expressions of remorse during sentencing.
However, Judge Nolan emphasized the severity of Ormond’s actions, noting he intentionally ran the red light, was travelling at excessive speed, and abandoned the scene, causing significant suffering to the Furlong family. While considering Ormond’s previous convictions – described as “quite old” - the judge stated he believed Ormond was unlikely to re-offend in a similar manner.
Ultimately, Judge Nolan sentenced Ormond to four years and three months imprisonment, extending his sympathy to the Furlong family for their profound loss.
