A former soldier has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the murder of his Irish girlfriend at a Spanish holiday hotel two years ago. Keith Byrne, 34, was convicted of murdering Kirsty ward, 36, in Salou on July 2, 2023, after she informed him of her intention to end their relationship.
The Crime and Conviction
Public prosecutors had sought a 20-year sentence for Byrne, who was found guilty by a jury following three days of deliberations in May. The sentencing judge, Susana Calvo Gonzalez, acknowledged that the couple had been in a stable eight-month relationship, which she deemed an aggravating factor. However, she also cited Byrne’s consumption of alcohol and drugs prior to the murder as a prevailing mitigating factor, stating it diminished his cognitive faculties.
“I understand that there is a prevailing basis for imposing the lower penalty and, thus, imposing a sentence of between seven years and six months and 15 years,” the judge explained. “Within that range, the recognition of the aggravating circumstance and the motivation for the act…lead to the imposition of the maximum penalty, which is 15 years in prison.”
Byrne had claimed during his trial in Tarragona that Ms. Ward, a mother-of-one, had died by suicide at the four-star Magnolia Hotel. He presented himself as a “respectful and intelligent” father of three, asserting he would never commit an act of domestic violence. He also described Ms. Ward as someone with a volatile personality, capable of being “four people in one day.”
Family’s Outlook and Prosecutor’s Argument
Ms. Ward’s mother, Jackie Ward, testified during the trial, expressing her dislike and distrust of Byrne. She revealed that her daughter had planned to leave Byrne during their “make or break” holiday, a fact she discovered after her death.
Public prosecutor Javier Goimil, a specialist in domestic violence, refuted Byrne’s suicide claim in his closing statement. He argued that Byrne, who resided in Duleek,Co. Meath, had acted with a possessive motive, believing, “you’re mine or you’re nobody’s.” Goimil asserted that byrne strangled his girlfriend to death using a hair straightener power cord as she sought to end their relationship.
Sentencing and Restraining Order
In addition to the 15-year prison sentence, byrne has been issued a restraining order. This order prohibits him from contacting Ms. Ward’s child, mother, and other family members for 25 years. He is also forbidden from going within 1,000 metres of them during this period. Moreover, Byrne has been ordered to pay compensation to Ms.Ward’s relatives.
