Man avoids Jail Time After Threatening Ex With Revenge Porn
Basel, Switzerland – A 31-year-old Portuguese man narrowly avoided jail time after threatening to release intimate videos of his ex-girlfriend without her consent. The Basel court found him guilty of attempting to coerce the woman back into a relationship by threatening to post the videos online.Prosecutors argued the man used the videos as leverage, demanding she re-establish contact or face public humiliation. The court heard how the man hoped to force the woman into resuming the relationship or complying with his demands against her will.During the investigation, authorities seized the man’s Samsung Galaxy phone, which he used to make the threats. The phone contained over 5,700 pornographic videos, some believed to have been filmed in Portugal without the women’s knowledge or consent.
While the man admitted to filming othre women without their permission, prosecutors were unable to prove violations of privacy laws due to the sheer volume of videos, which made a thorough analysis impractical.
The court sentenced the man to 90 days of fines, amounting to $30 per day. The sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he will avoid jail time as long as he doesn’t commit any further offenses. He was also ordered to pay a fine of 300 Swiss francs (approximately $330), which will be converted to three days in prison if not paid.
