Minnesota BCA Investigates Paynesville Officer-Involved Shooting

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday night in Paynesville, Minn. Police responded to a report of a domestic dispute on the 600 block of stearns Avenue around 9:05 p.m.
According to Paynesville Police Chief Paul Wegner, officers from Paynesville and Cold spring, along with Stearns County Sheriff’s Office deputies, safely evacuated an adult female from the residence. The suspect, reportedly armed, had locked himself in the basement.
Officers entered the house and attempted verbal contact, instructing the man to show himself at the basement stairs with his hands visible and informing him he was under arrest. Shots were subsequently fired as police attempted to take the man into custody. The news release did not describe the ensuing shooting in any more detail.
medical personnel and officers administered life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, Wegner said. A firearm was recovered.The woman who reported the assault sustained minor injuries to her head and neck.
Chief Wegner confirmed that body-worn cameras were active during the incident. The BCA is currently handling the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
This tragic occurrence leaves our community in a state of shock that we were not planning to wake up to today. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved during this tremendously sad day.
Paynesville Mayor Shawn Reinke issued this statement Tuesday, noting that chief Wegner had kept him informed of events.
