An adult male suffered serious injuries late Thursday night following a powerful explosion aboard an older fishing vessel moored in Korsvikfjorden in Kristiansand, according to local police and rescue officials.
Agder Police District received the initial emergency calls at 11:23 p.m. on September 10, 2026, after residents across the fjord reported a violent blast that rattled houses, according to reporting by Aftenposten and TV 2. Police later adjusted the reported notification time to 11:39 p.m. in log updates cited by TV 2.
Emergency Response and Investigation Into the Cause
The injured man was transported to the hospital by ambulance following the blast. Police prosecutor Vanja Bruvoll stated Friday morning that law enforcement had not yet received a definitive update on the man’s precise medical condition, according to TV 2.
Investigators and emergency personnel responded quickly to the scene at the waterfront, where the approximately 60-foot wooden fishing vessel lay tied to land. Police confirmed that no other individuals were registered or found on board at the time of the incident.
According to operations leader Eyvind Formo, the blast generated massive physical forces that blew out parts of the vessel’s bow, causing the hull to take on water, as reported by TV 2 and Aftenposten. Authorities have not yet determined the exact trigger for the accident.
It has been a very powerful explosion with great forces. Cause is unknown, but a hypothesis is that it is some form of gas explosion. Further investigation must seek to clarify cause.

Police investigators plan to carry out technical forensic examinations at the site and conduct formal witness interviews to establish the sequence of events, according to statements given to Aftenposten by police prosecutor Anja Bruvoll.
Impact on the Surrounding Neighborhood
Local residents living roughly 100 to 150 meters away on the opposite side of the fjord recounted waking up abruptly to the force of the detonation. Erlend Hagstrøm Simonsen told TV 2 that the impact shook his family’s newly built home, leading residents to initially inspect their own properties for structural damage before spotting activity across the water.
Simonsen described the vessel as an older fishing boat that had remained docked in the same location for a long time without showing signs of active navigation. By Friday morning, local observers noted that the stern of the boat had settled lower into the shallow seabed, developing a visible list.
The municipal fire department deployed oil containment booms around the perimeter of the wrecked hull to guard against potential environmental leaks. Police stated that formal salvage operations will take place at a later stage in direct coordination with the vessel’s insurance company.
