A 46-year-old man was taken into custody on April 4, 2026, following a series of shootings targeting traffic cameras in Carson City that sparked fires and ended in a vehicle crash.
Authorities identified the suspect as Kerry Benson. The incident began around 1:10 a.m. On April 4, when the Carson City Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire and fires at multiple locations in south Carson City.
Traffic Camera Shootings
Investigators determined that Benson was captured on city camera systems firing at traffic cameras along Fairview Drive. The shootings occurred at the intersections of Fairview Drive and South Edmonds, Fairview Drive and South Roop Street, and Fairview Drive and Koontz Lane.
Two of the shooting incidents caused the lithium batteries within the camera systems to catch fire.
Pursuit and Crash
Shortly after the shootings, deputies located Benson in his vehicle on Sonoma Street near Carson Street. Benson fled the scene at a high rate of speed, leading deputies on a pursuit that lasted several miles through south Carson City.
The chase continued east to Carson River Road at Pinion Hills Drive, where Benson’s vehicle overturned and caught fire.
Benson was taken into custody at the scene. He sustained head and leg trauma and was transported by Care Flight to Renown Regional Medical Center for treatment. No other injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
Ongoing Investigations
The investigation into the shooting of the city-owned camera systems is being conducted by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. The investigation into the vehicle crash is being managed by the Nevada State Police.
