Palm Beach, Florida – A man was shot and killed by law enforcement early Sunday morning after entering the secure perimeter of Mar-a-Lago, the resort owned by former U.S. President Donald Trump. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. Local time, according to a statement released by the U.S. Secret Service.
The Secret Service confirmed that the individual, described as being in his early 20s and from North Carolina, was armed with a shotgun and a gas can. Authorities were alerted after the man drove a vehicle into the security zone as another vehicle was exiting. He was confronted by Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy near the north gate of the property.
According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, the man was ordered to drop his weapons. “He was ordered to drop those two pieces of equipment that he had with them. At which time he put down the gas can, raised the shotgun to a shooting position,” Bradshaw stated during a press conference. Agents and the deputy then opened fire, neutralizing the threat.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been publicly released. Investigators are currently working to establish a psychological profile and determine a motive for the intrusion. Bradshaw indicated that, as of Sunday, the individual was not known to law enforcement. The FBI has requested that residents in the vicinity of Mar-a-Lago review any security camera footage that might be relevant to the investigation.
Notably, former President Trump was not present at Mar-a-Lago at the time of the incident. He and First Lady Melania Trump were at the White House in Washington, D.C., having attended the National Governors Association dinner on Saturday, .
The Secret Service spokesman, Anthony Guglielmi, revealed that the man had been reported missing by his family several days prior to the incident. Investigators believe he traveled south and acquired the shotgun en route. A box for the weapon was discovered inside his vehicle.
This incident marks the latest in a series of security concerns surrounding the former President. Trump has previously been the target of threats, including two reported assassination attempts during the election campaign. The Mar-a-Lago resort, frequently visited by Trump, has therefore remained a focal point for security measures.
The breach at Mar-a-Lago comes at a time of heightened political tensions within the United States. Recent reports indicate a broader pattern of political violence, raising concerns about the safety of public figures and the stability of democratic institutions. While investigators are still determining the specific motivations behind this incident, it underscores the ongoing challenges faced by security services in protecting high-profile individuals.
The Secret Service has not released further details regarding the specific protocols followed during the confrontation, nor have they commented on potential adjustments to security measures at Mar-a-Lago. However, it is anticipated that a thorough review of security procedures will be conducted in the wake of this event.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward. The focus remains on understanding the circumstances that led to the man’s actions and ensuring the continued safety of Mar-a-Lago and its occupants.
