Comedian’s Trip to Cairo Takes Unexpected Turn After Flight Cancellation

A comedian from Brooklyn, New York, found himself unexpectedly extending his vacation – and relocating his life – to Cairo, Egypt, after a flight cancellation revealed a little-known U.S. Regulation regarding pet travel. Ben Jenkins, a comedian, initially traveled to Cairo in early January to visit a friend, bringing his four-month-old pug, Croissant, along for the adventure.

Jenkins chose to bring Croissant, as he travels frequently for work and wanted the puppy to become accustomed to longer journeys. According to Jenkins, the experience was beneficial for Croissant’s socialization, falling within a crucial period for puppy development.

However, their return trip hit a snag when a snowstorm in New York led to the cancellation of their flight. While attempting to rebook, Jenkins discovered a U.S. Rule he was unaware of: puppies under six months old are not permitted to enter the United States, even if they originate from within the country.

Faced with the choice of leaving Croissant behind or remaining in Cairo, Jenkins opted to stay with his new companion. “Go where life takes you… or traps you,” he wrote on TikTok, documenting his predicament and subsequent decision.

Jenkins quickly adapted to his new circumstances, renting a room and arranging to work remotely from Cairo until March. He shared his story on TikTok, where it quickly gained traction, resonating with users charmed by the unlikely duo and their unexpected adventure.

The pair has been enjoying their extended stay in Cairo, exploring the city and embracing the change of pace. Jenkins, known for his ability to find humor in everyday situations, has taken the unexpected turn in stride. “I love my kooky life,” he posted.

The story highlights a potentially surprising regulation for pet owners planning international travel. According to a report by February 5, 2026, Jenkins’ flight to Cairo lasted approximately 10 to 11 hours, and Croissant traveled comfortably in a carrier under the seat.

While Jenkins’ situation arose from a flight cancellation, it serves as a reminder for travelers to thoroughly research pet travel requirements before embarking on international trips. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) rules, as reported by People.com, specifically bar dogs under six months old from entering the U.S. From certain locations.
