Manchester United are reportedly tracking Gambian defender Sedi Kinteh, 19, after his impressive debut season with Norwegian Eliteserien side Tromso IL. The centre-back’s performances have attracted attention from a number of European clubs, with United weighing up a potential summer approach.

A Meteoric Rise in Norway

Kinteh’s ascent in Norwegian football has been swift. Tromso finished third in the Eliteserien last season, and Kinteh played a key role in their success. He was initially signed through Tromso’s partnership with Senegalese academy Mawade Wade, impressing coaching staff during a trial and earning a five-year contract.

The Gambia international offers versatility, being capable of playing both as a centre-back and at full-back. Notably, Kinteh possesses exceptional speed, clocked at just over 37km/h – matching the top speed recorded by Tottenham Hotspur’s Micky van de Ven. This is a significant attribute, exceeding the highest speed registered by a Manchester United player this season, Bryan Mbeumo, at 36.4km/h.

Competition for the “Gambian Gem”

While Manchester United are considering Kinteh, they are not alone in their interest. Chelsea are also monitoring the defender, with scouts reportedly returning with positive assessments. Swiss clubs Basel and Young Boys are also in the mix, contemplating a bid with the intention of potentially selling him on for a profit in the future.

The potential for a quick resale is a strategy exemplified by Slavia Prague’s recent success with El Hadji Malick Diouf, another Tromso alumnus. Slavia Prague signed Diouf for just under £5 million in 2024 and sold him to West Ham United 18 months later for £19 million.

Tromso have reportedly set an asking price of “around £4 million” for Kinteh, which would make him their second-most expensive sale, behind Diouf. This relatively modest fee could be appealing to Manchester United, allowing them to allocate the majority of their summer transfer budget to strengthening their midfield – a stated priority for the club.

Adding a versatile, young defender like Kinteh would provide valuable depth to the backline without significantly impacting the funds available for more pressing needs. The club is described as having “strong links” in Norway, potentially facilitating negotiations.

Carrick’s Squad Assessment and Defensive Needs

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick recently provided an update on squad fitness, confirming that Mason Mount will not be fit to face West Ham on February 10, 2026, but could return against Everton on February 23, 2026. Matthijs de Ligt is also expected to be considered around the same timeframe. Carrick emphasized the importance of defensive solidity, stating his team is “getting the balance right” and “absorbing what has been asked of them.”
