Manchester United’s recent post-season tour of Asia, a 14,000-mile, six-day expedition, is estimated to have generated £10 million for the club. This guaranteed payment is separate from ticket sales. The trip, however, has been met with controversy, overshadowing its commercial objectives and player readiness for the upcoming season in the United States.
The tour served to bolster existing sponsorship deals with partners like Maybank, malaysia Airlines, Tiger, and Apollo. Though, the team’s performance and player conduct drew criticism. Following a 1-0 defeat to a South-East Asia select XI, Andre Onana, Harry Maguire, and Diogo Dalot were seen heading to the airport, skipping the second game in Hong Kong. They traveled to Mumbai for a commercial program arranged by Apollo.
Some players embraced a relaxed approach to the tour. the atmosphere on the flight to Kuala Lumpur was reportedly festive, and some players were seen at a club shortly after arrival. After their defeat in Kuala Lumpur, players joked about being booed by fans so far from home.
While some players, like Joshua Zirkzee, sought late-night food, others, such as Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho, faced different challenges. Garnacho, despite being popular among fans, showed signs of disengagement. After the ASEAN All-Stars defeat, he initially failed to exchange shirts with Sergio Aguero, though a kitman later rectified the situation.
diallo later responded to alleged abuse directed at his mother with a one-fingered gesture, captured in social media images. He acknowledged his reaction was wrong but stood by his sentiment.
The decision to hold a bus parade in Kuala Lumpur, featuring players like Zirkzee, was also questioned, especially after the club had ruled out a parade even if they had won the Europa League final. While some fans attended, the turnout was significantly smaller compared to Manchester United’s 2009 visit.
Nani, along with Wes brown and John O’Shea, participated in the tour as club “legends” to promote the Manchester United brand.
What’s next
Manchester United will likely reassess the balance between commercial opportunities and player well-being in future tours, considering the negative attention garnered from this trip. The club will need to focus on rebuilding team morale and preparing for the upcoming season.
