DETROIT (April 2, 2025) – General Motors is seeking a Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Engineering Manager to join its team. This hybrid role requires a minimum of three days per week on-site at locations in Austin, Texas; Mountain view, California; or Warren, Michigan.
SRE Engineering Manager: Responsibilities and Expectations
The SRE Engineering Manager will lead a team, setting priorities and ensuring alignment with organizational objectives. The role demands technical proficiency, with expectations to contribute through coding, code reviews, and engineer mentorship. While coding will not be the primary focus, the manager should be capable and willing to engage in technical problem-solving and support team decisions.
Key responsibilities
- Develop tools and software to automate operational processes and improve system reliability.
- lead the implementation and enhancement of monitoring and observability frameworks.
- Participate in on-call rotations for incident diagnosis, troubleshooting, and mitigation.
- Collaborate with developers to ensure service quality, scalability, and reliability.
- Manage Service Level Indicators (SLIs), Service Level Objectives (SLOs), and Service Level Agreements (slas).
- Apply understanding of application reliability patterns.
- Conduct incident analyses and collaborate on post-incident reviews.
- Evaluate system performance and advocate for optimizations.
Required skills and Abilities
Candidates should possess the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- More then eight years of experience in software development teams.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language, such as Python, Go, or Java.
- Solid understanding of operating systems, networking, distributed systems, databases, and storage architectures.
- Experience handling production incidents, including root cause analysis and mitigation.
- Strong communication skills.
- Experience in automating manual processes and managing configuration systems.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are considered a plus:
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Familiarity with container orchestration systems like Kubernetes.
- Experience managing or developing distributed systems.
- Prior experience with Java in production.
Compensation and benefits
The salary range for this role is $165,000 to $298,800, with the actual base salary dependent on factors relevant to the position. An incentive pay programme offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
