Managing Diabetes: How Mental Health Boosts Control and Wellness
Mental Health Challenges in Diabetes Management
An awareness session at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) highlighted the mental health challenges faced by diabetes patients. The event was organized in collaboration with the Telangana state chapter of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (TS-RSSDI).
Dr. N Bheerappa, Director of NIMS, shared important findings from research. He noted that people with diabetes encounter daily difficulties in managing their condition at home, work, and school. According to an International Diabetes Federation (IDF) survey, 77% of individuals with diabetes report mental health issues like anxiety and depression. Furthermore, four out of five individuals experience diabetes burnout. A 2020 study at NIMS revealed that 28% of diabetes patients reported moderate to severe diabetes distress.
Dr. Bheerappa emphasized the need for support from family, healthcare workers, and the community. He stated, “It is essential to address mental health concerns alongside glycemic management. A holistic approach is necessary to improve the physical, mental, and social well-being of those living with diabetes.”
This session underscored the importance of recognizing and addressing the mental health aspects of diabetes to enhance overall patient care and support.
