Manchester City agreed to a £125m (€146m) deal to sign midfielder Enzo Fernández from Chelsea, matching the British transfer record while reshaping the Premier League landscape ahead of the deadline.

The transfer features a fixed fee with no performance-related clauses or add-ons. Fernández leaves Chelsea after initially arriving for £106.8 million (€121m), making him the first Premier League player to be sold for more than £100m twice. The player had a close relationship with manager Enzo Maresca, who left Chelsea earlier to take charge at Manchester City.

Record-Equalling Valuation and Market Comparison

The £125m (€146m) price tag matches the British record transfer fee that Liverpool paid to sign striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle during last year’s summer Deadline Day. Chelsea had originally set a £120m deadline for City to bid two weeks prior, but City ultimately chose to pay £5m more to finalize the move on deadline day.

The acquisition adds to a heavy wave of midfield spending by Manchester City. The club previously secured Ayyoub Bouaddi for £81.4m/€94.9m and Elliot Anderson for £116m/€135.2m, while key midfielder Rodri departed for Barcelona for a £65 million (€76m) fee.

Roster Impact and Squad Adjustments at Chelsea

The departure leaves Chelsea with limited time to secure a replacement for the outgoing midfielder. Potential targets Lamine Camara and Manu Koné were ruled out, alongside Alex Scott, leaving the club to rely on in-house options including Moisés Caicedo, Roméo Lavia, and Valentín Barco.

Elsewhere across the Premier League on deadline day, Aston Villa completed a double signing by adding Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported club-record £47m (€55m) and defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton. Newcastle United also finalized the acquisition of forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille for roughly £51m (€60m) as the eighth signing of their window, while striker Nick Woltemade joined Juventus on loan.
