Peter Mandelson, Britain’s ambassador to the United States, has expressed regret regarding his past association with Jeffrey Epstein. The UK ambassador’s links to the late financier, a convicted sex offender, came to light in a 2019 JP Morgan report filed in New York court.
Epstein, who faced sex trafficking charges, died by suicide in August 2019 while awaiting trial. He had previously served time for procuring a minor for prostitution. The JP Morgan report indicated that Mandelson stayed at Epstein’s Manhattan apartment during that period. In a 2009 email, Epstein told his banker that “Peter will be staying at 71st over weekend…”
At the time, Lord Mandelson served as Buisness Secretary under then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown. He assumed his role as UK ambassador to the United States in December 2024.

When asked about staying at Epstein’s apartment while the financier was incarcerated,Mandelson said,”I’m not answering any questions about him. My knowledge of him is something I regret. I wish I’d never met him in the first place.”
Questioned about maintaining contact with Epstein during his jail time, Lord Mandelson responded, “Why did many people meet him? He was a prolific networker. And I wish I’d never met him in the first place,” highlighting the widespread networking that Jeffrey Epstein engaged in.
As ambassador, Lord Mandelson represents British interests in Washington. He has pledged to treat Donald Trump’s administration with “respect, seriousness and understanding.”
This stance marks a shift from his earlier criticism of Trump. In 2019, Mandelson described the U.S. president as a “danger to the world.” He later apologized for those remarks, calling them “ill-judged and wrong.”
Even those who have a sneaking admiration for Donald Trump because of his personality, nonetheless regard him as reckless, and a danger to the world.
