Rex Heuermann, a 62-year-old Long Island architect, pleaded guilty on April 8, 2026, to murdering seven women and admitted to killing an eighth in a series of long-unsolved crimes known as the Gilgo Beach killings. The pleas were entered during a court hearing at the Suffolk County Court in Riverhead, New York.
Heuermann’s legal admissions include three counts of first-degree murder and four counts of intentional murder. While he was not formally charged in the death of Karen Vergata, he admitted during the proceedings that he killed her in 1996.
The proceedings bring a conclusion to a case that had stymied investigators for years and garnered significant public attention and true-crime documentation. Heuermann is scheduled to be sentenced in June to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Details of the Crimes
During questioning by Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney, Heuermann provided specific details regarding the methods used in the killings. He admitted that he strangled all eight victims and dismembered some of them.

Heuermann further confessed to using burner phones to contact the women and wrapping their bodies in burlap before dumping them. The investigation into the serial killings was eventually advanced by the use of DNA evidence.
Court Proceedings and Reactions
The courtroom in Riverhead was filled with reporters, police officers, and relatives of the victims. Some family members were seen weeping as Heuermann detailed his crimes in court.
Following the guilty pleas, District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney held a news conference at the Suffolk County Police Academy Gymnasium in Brentwood, New York. The event was attended by victims’ family members, some of whom were visibly emotional while listening to the District Attorney.
The revelation of Heuermann’s secret life as a serial killer has left his own family in shock, with reports indicating disbelief from his wife and daughter regarding his admitted role in the murders.
