New York City Responds to Prolonged Cold Snap

New York City is facing its 11th consecutive day of below-freezing weather, potentially marking the longest such period in the city’s history, according to Mayor Zohran Mamdani. AccuWeather forecasts do not predict temperatures rising above freezing for at least another week.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, February 2, 2026, Mayor Mamdani stated that city outreach workers have “intensified” their efforts to assist those exposed to the cold. Warming sites are operating across all five boroughs, and shelter capacity has been expanded with relaxed intake rules.

As of Monday morning, 930 people have been placed in shelters and safe haves. Eighteen individuals “who were determined to be a danger to themselves or to others” have been involuntarily transported to safety, the mayor reported.

The city has also increased its fleet of mobile warming units to 20, and added 50 new single-room shelter units “for those who are uncomfortable with other forms of shelter,” Mamdani said.

The tallest tower of the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building, located at 1 Centre St, Manhattan, will open for free public tours this summer, as announced by Mayor Mamdani and Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) Commissioner Yume Kitasei on Monday, February 2, 2026.

Elsewhere in New York City, the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD series is underway, with a performance hosted by Lisette Oropesa, as of December 13, 2025.

Jack’s Wife Freda, a restaurant with roots in South Africa and Israel, continues to operate in New York City, carrying on a family tradition of hospitality and good food. The restaurant will bring back a special offering on February 25th.

Eataly is currently offering discounts of up to 50% on select artisanal products from Italy, a promotion running until February 9.

New York State newspapers, including El Diario de Nueva York, are available on microfilm and paper at locations throughout the state.
