BJP Leaders Resign Amid Manipur Violence
On November 18, 2024, violence in Manipur escalated, leading to multiple resignations from BJP officials in the Jiribam district. These leaders submitted a resignation letter to the BJP high command, citing the difficult conditions in the state.
However, the BJP state office stated they have not received any resignation letters from the Jiribam Mandal. The joint letter was addressed to Manipur BJP chief Sharda Devi.
The unrest follows the abduction and death of six Meitei civilians by Kuki militants. The situation intensified with protests on Sunday, resulting in one protestor, identified as K Athouba, being killed by security forces in Jiribam.
In response to the chaos, mobs destroyed local BJP and Congress offices. Security forces opened fire to restore order. Additionally, a mob set fire to the residence of Minister Govindas Konthoujam, causing approximately Rs 3 crore in damages.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the security situation in Manipur. He instructed the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure peace in the state. The government is actively working to restore stability as Manipur continues to experience severe inter-communal clashes. Since May last year, violence has resulted in at least 250 deaths and the displacement of 60,000 people.
