High Alert in Manipur Amid Violent Protests
Manipur is under high alert following protests triggered by the discovery of six bodies, including women and children, allegedly killed by militants in Jiribam district. To manage rising tensions, officials imposed an indefinite curfew in several areas of Imphal Valley and suspended internet services to prevent unrest.
On November 17, debris covered roads in Imphal after protesters targeted the homes of state ministers and local lawmakers. Security forces used tear gas to disperse crowds during the ongoing violence. The unrest started when six individuals went missing from a relief camp during a clash between militants and security forces. The bodies were later recovered in two locations, escalating the protests against local politicians.
Demands for Action
The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has issued a 24-hour ultimatum for military action against the militants and called for the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), which was reinstated in some districts earlier this month.
Reports indicate ongoing arson, although the details remain unverified.
Political Repercussions
Union Home Minister Amit Shah canceled his scheduled rallies in Maharashtra and returned to Delhi due to the escalating situation in Manipur. Elections in Maharashtra are set for November 20.
Security Measures Intensified
An indefinite curfew has been enacted in Imphal East, West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching districts in response to attacks on political figures’ residences. Internet services have been temporarily suspended across seven districts to maintain order.
Police arrested 23 individuals linked to the attacks and reported the destruction of properties, including churches and homes.
Calls for Peace
Rahul Gandhi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Manipur and work towards restoring peace following the violence. He expressed concern over ongoing clashes and the need for reconciliation.
Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the BJP, alleging that the party is allowing the violence to continue for political gain. He highlighted that at least 17 people have died since November 7, urging immediate action.
