The fourth season of Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer marks a significant shift for the legal drama, placing its protagonist, Mickey Haller, in the unusual position of defending himself against a murder charge. This narrative turn, described as “darker” by star Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, is proving to be a compelling evolution for the series, already earning praise as potentially its strongest season yet.

Garcia-Rulfo’s portrayal of Haller has been central to the show’s success and his ability to balance the character’s charisma with the weight of his current predicament is a key driver of the season’s emotional resonance. The actor notes that the darker material has been particularly rewarding, with scripts that have even brought him to tears. This season, he explains, feels “heavier and darker,” with Haller visibly burdened by the stakes – his life, reputation, and freedom all hanging in the balance.

The success of The Lincoln Lawyer has provided Garcia-Rulfo with a platform to pursue diverse projects. He balances approximately five months of filming each year with other roles, including a part in the 2025 blockbuster Jurassic World Rebirth alongside Scarlett Johansson, and independent film work. He recently completed Andrew Haigh’s adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s A Long Winter, and previously starred in and produced a 2024 adaptation of the seminal Mexican novel Pedro Páramo.

The show’s international appeal is notable. Garcia-Rulfo reports that Netflix data consistently shows strong viewership in Europe, as well as the United States and Canada. He attributes this, with a touch of humor, to the show’s resonance in countries “where the legal system works.” This broad reach underscores the universal appeal of a well-crafted legal thriller, even as it tackles culturally specific themes.

Season four’s storyline, which centers on a Mexican man unjustly targeted by law enforcement, is particularly timely. Garcia-Rulfo acknowledges the resonance with current events, drawing a parallel to the work of filmmakers like Paul Thomas Anderson, who he believes are similarly reflecting the “current energy” in their art. The narrative is directly adapted from the source material, the Mickey Haller novels, but its relevance to contemporary issues is undeniable.

Garcia-Rulfo’s connection to Pedro Páramo is deeply personal. He is a second cousin of the author, Juan Rulfo, and grew up immersed in the novel’s legacy. He describes the book as encapsulating the essence of Mexico – “the blood, the tears, the happiness, the relevance of Mexico” – and his involvement in the adaptation was a “life-changing experience.” He notes that the novel is a foundational text for many Mexicans, often read in youth, though its complexity is often not fully appreciated until later in life.

Looking ahead, Garcia-Rulfo expresses a desire to collaborate with Mexico’s leading filmmakers – Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro, and Alejandro González Iñárritu. His recent work with Andrew Haigh, even in a smaller role, reaffirmed his passion for the craft, highlighting Haigh’s “sensibility and compassion” as a director.

Beyond the artistic and professional rewards, Garcia-Rulfo offers a pragmatic takeaway from his experience with The Lincoln Lawyer: “Don’t get in trouble, man. It’s a pain.” He adds that the show has given him a greater appreciation for the complexities of the legal system, observing that courtroom outcomes often depend as much on “charm” as on legal merit.

With a fifth season already confirmed, The Lincoln Lawyer continues to build momentum. The show’s ability to evolve its narrative while remaining grounded in compelling character work, coupled with Garcia-Rulfo’s strong performance, positions it for continued success on the increasingly competitive streaming landscape.
