For a dozen days,Midi Libre realizes his Vuelta Taurine in Spain outside the Ferias circuit of the first category arenas. The 8th stage took place at Colmenar viejo with a bullfight of the Conde of Mayalde for Jose Maria Manzanares, Juan Ortega and Pablo Aguado.
Colmenar Viejo could easily apply to the podium of the ugliest arenas in Spain. A metallic exterior and concrete stands, wich can bring almost 10,000 people together, overlook the city and the Sierra de Guadarrama. Though, this northern suburbs of Madrid is a land of Toros which houses, a stone’s throw away, farms like Victoriano del rio, el Retamar, Flor de Jara or Aurelio Hernandez.
The Tragedy of josé Cuberto “el Yiyo”
But Colmenar Viejo, the onyl second category arena in the Madrid region, is mainly known to aficionados by a tragedy. The death of José Cuberto “El yiyo” who was pierced his heart by ”Burlero”, a toro by Marcos Nuñez on August 30, 1986.The legend remains lively of this student of the Taurine school in Madrid, born in Bordeaux, who died before reaching the infirmary by pronouncing only a few words to his banderillero Pali: “este toro me killed.” A figure of the Toreo at 21, El Yiyo entered the legend and his statue dominates the forecourt of the arenas of Las Ventas in Madrid.
