Māori Trade Leadership: Tane Waetford’s Role at New Zealand’s MFAT
Tane Waetford – Lead Adviser Māori Trade
Tane Waetford works as the Lead Adviser for Māori Trade at New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT). He is part of the Trade Policy Engagement and Implementation Division (TPEI). This division focuses on managing MFAT’s engagement with Māori stakeholders regarding trade issues. It also oversees the management and upgrade of New Zealand’s active trade agreements.
Tane joined MFAT in 2009. He has held various roles in Wellington, including positions in the North Asia Division, APEC, United Nations, Human Rights and Commonwealth Division, and the Māori Policy Unit. He has experience from overseas postings in Brazil and Argentina, along with assignments in the Philippines and Ireland.
Tane earned a Bachelor of Laws in 2005 and a Master of Laws in 2009 from Victoria University of Wellington | Te Herenga Waka. He is of Māori descent and has tribal connections to Ngāpuhi and Whakatōhea.
Tane’s work is vital for ensuring that Māori perspectives are integrated into New Zealand’s trade policies. His efforts enrich the dialogue between government and Māori communities, promoting equitable trade practices.
