Maple Ridge,B.C. – A quiet residential street in Maple Ridge was shattered by violence Wednesday night, leaving two beloved neighbours dead and the community reeling. Ridge Meadows RCMP responded to a dispute call earlier in the evening, onyl to be called back hours later to a scene of devastation involving a vehicle fire, a home invasion, and ultimately, two fatalities.
A Night of Terror Unfolds
The tragic events began to unfold just before 11 p.m. when the Maple Ridge Fire Department was dispatched to a vehicle fire at a residence. upon arrival, firefighters discovered a “break and enter in progress” at the same address.
Neighbours, alerted by the commotion and the sight of flames, described a scene of chaos and bravery. Bruce Fairweather, a resident of the affected neighbourhood, recounted how several neighbours heroically rushed to the front door after seeing cars on fire. “The front door had been smashed open, so right away they knew there was something going on,” Fairweather told CBC News.
When police arrived, they were met with a horrific discovery: two vehicles and the attached garage were engulfed in flames, and two individuals were found dead inside the home.
Inquiry Leads to Third Fatality
The situation escalated further as Mounties received information that a person, believed to be armed, was located in a neighbouring home. Police established a containment perimeter around the property. With the assistance of the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response team, officers entered the neighbouring residence, where they discovered a third person deceased.
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO), the province’s civilian-led police watchdog, has confirmed that the third individual’s death appeared to be a self-inflicted injury. The IIO is now leading the investigation into the police actions during the incident, a standard procedure when deaths or serious harm occur in connection with police involvement.
Community in Shock and Grief
The violence has left the tight-knit Maple Ridge community in a state of shock and deep mourning. Fairweather, speaking about the victims, described them as “good neighbours, nice to have as neighbours, and very engaging.” The sudden and brutal loss of the couple has left him and others struggling to comprehend the tragedy.”So to see them both gone now, it’s hard to fathom,” he said, his voice heavy with emotion.
the initial police response earlier in the evening involved officers speaking with “several individuals” following a report of a dispute, but no arrests were made at that time. The full sequence of events leading to the devastating outcome remains under investigation by the RCMP and the IIO.
As the community grapples with this profound loss, the focus remains on supporting the grieving neighbours and understanding the circumstances that led to such a violent night on their street.
