Manakau,NZ – In a ⁢heartwarming display of community spirit adn conventional Māori hospitality,Te Iwi o⁣ Ngāti Tukorehe Marae near Manakau has opened its doors to drivers stranded⁤ by a notable crash on State Highway 1.The highway remains closed for several hours following a two-vehicle collision that occurred around 10:20 am between Whakahoro and kuku East Roads.

Community Steps Up Amidst Road Closure

Emergency services are currently on site managing ⁣the aftermath of the crash. The closure has caused considerable disruption, with traffic at a ⁢standstill in the southbound lane ⁣and ⁤a ⁢long ⁤queue of vehicles, including trucks and cars, unable to proceed⁢ north.

A local business worker described the scene as “very⁤ quiet” with the usual “drone of the traffic” replaced by the sounds of people. They expressed admiration for the marae’s initiative, calling it “fabulous” that they have welcomed those affected by ⁣the closure.

Manaaki: A Tradition of Care

The generosity of Te Iwi o Ngāti Tukorehe Marae is rooted in the concept of manaaki, a core Māori value encompassing hospitality, kindness,⁤ and care for others. A social media post from the marae confirmed they are offering “manaaki in the form of water and access to whare paku (toilets) to those stuck in traffic.” The post powerfully stated, “Know us before you judge us.Caring for others is‍ in our blood.”

This act of‍ kindness comes shortly after members of the Horowhenua-based Ngāti Tukorehe community announced they would be flying⁣ their flags even higher along State Highway 1. This decision followed what they described as a “racist” attack, where several of their Tino Rangatira flags were torn down earlier this month. The image accompanying this report shows flags outside Pereetuhere marae, highlighting their visible presence and cultural significance.

Travel advisory and Diversions

Police are urging ⁣motorists to delay any non-essential travel. For those needing to proceed, diversions are in place via Palmerston North and the Remutaka Hill, wich are estimated to add ⁢approximately three hours to travel times.

The actions of Te⁣ Iwi o Ngāti Tukorehe Marae serve as ‍a powerful reminder of⁢ the strength and compassion found within communities, especially during times of unexpected hardship.
