Classes will resume at Marana High School on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following the death of a student on campus early Tuesday morning, according to the Marana Unified School District. Police and district officials confirmed that resources will be available to support students and staff as normal schedules restart.

Police Investigation and Campus Closure

Marana police responded to the high school campus at approximately 6:47 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, after school staff discovered a deceased individual, according to spokesperson Vincent Rizzi. Investigators determined that the individual had broken into the campus at about 1:30 a.m. that morning. Authorities subsequently identified the deceased as a Marana High School student, though officials have not released the student’s name, and the family has been notified. The Marana Police Department stated that the incident appeared to be isolated, involving a single person, and that there was no ongoing danger or continuing threat to the public. The unexpected discovery forced a complete shutdown of the school for the day. The Marana Unified School District notified families and staff that classes were canceled while detectives processed the scene, noting that all staff members who had reported to work were safe and accounted for.

Community Impact Across Pima County

The emergency closure affected a large student body and a vast geographic area. Marana High School enrolls 2,437 students across grades 9 through 12 for the 2026–27 school year, making it one of the largest high schools in Pima County, according to Public School Review. The school’s attendance boundary spans roughly 481.7 square miles, requiring some students to commute between 30 and 60 minutes from rural locations such as Three Points. Under protocols managed by the district’s Safety Center and coordinated with law enforcement, automated Safety Notices were sent out via email, text, and voice call to alert families who were already en route to school. Tuesday’s tragedy occurred less than three weeks after another loss within the district. On August 20, 2026, an 11-year-old cyclist was killed while riding to Tangerine Farms K-8 School after being struck in Marana.

Support Services and Resumption of Classes

In a communication sent to parents, the school district addressed the emotional toll of the incident. We are heartbroken, and we know this news has landed as a profound shock to our entire community, the district stated. Our top priority is welcoming students and staff back to a campus that feels safe and supportive. We will lean on one another and hold our Marana school community close. The district’s crisis response team will be stationed on campus to assist students and staff members struggling with the news. Additionally, the Marana Unified School District operates a 24-hour SpeakUp Safety Tip Line at (520) 518-4181, which allows students, staff, and community members to confidentially report safety concerns or mental health crises. Classes are scheduled to resume as normal on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
