Bungie has announced a Server Slam for its upcoming survival extraction FPS, Marathon, scheduled to run from to . This open preview weekend will be available on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, offering players a first look at the game’s core mechanics and setting before its official launch on .
Marathon casts players as “Runners,” bio-cybernetic mercenaries scavenging the remnants of the Tau Ceti IV colony, lost since 2472. The colony ship, UESC Marathon, arrived at its destination 300 years after leaving Mars, only to fall silent. Now, in 2893, Runners compete – and sometimes cooperate – to extract valuable resources and uncover the colony’s secrets while contending with hostile security forces and rival Runners.
The Server Slam will provide an introduction to Marathon’s gameplay, featuring a limited selection of maps, Runner customizations (“shells”), and contracts. Bungie plans to expand the content significantly with additional maps, factions, gear, and contracts both at launch and throughout Season 1.
Players who complete the introductory mission during the Server Slam will receive a commemorative emblem and banner to use in the full game upon its release. Bungie is offering tiered gear packages – including weapons and implants – to players based on their participation during the Server Slam, providing a head start when Marathon officially launches.
PlayStation Plus Exclusive Rewards
Bungie is also extending special rewards to PlayStation Plus subscribers. Players with a PlayStation Plus membership will be able to redeem exclusive weapon charms inspired by other popular titles: Helldivers 2 (the “For Freedom” Weapon Charm), Death Stranding 2 (the “Battle Guitar” Weapon Charm), and Ghost of Yōtei (the “Onryō” Weapon Charm). These charms will be accessible through the PlayStation Plus Exclusive Packs page once Marathon launches.
Details regarding rewards for Xbox and Steam players are expected to be announced at a later date.
A New Breed of FPS
Marathon distinguishes itself within the FPS genre through its emphasis on scavenging, crafting, and player interaction. The game supports solo play, cooperative crew-based gameplay, and dynamic alliances formed through proximity chat. Players will need to manage resources, build effective loadouts, and adapt to unpredictable environments to survive on Tau Ceti IV. The ultimate goal is to reach the derelict Marathon ship in orbit, a challenging endgame objective.
The game will be available in Standard and Deluxe editions for PlayStation 5, Steam, and Xbox Series X|S, and will support full cross-play and cross-save functionality. This allows players to seamlessly continue their progress across different platforms.
Server Slam and Steam Next Fest
The Marathon Server Slam will coincide with Steam Next Fest, providing an even broader audience with the opportunity to experience the game. This integration will likely increase visibility and generate further excitement leading up to the official launch.
Bungie’s decision to hold an open preview period before launch is a common practice in the modern gaming landscape, allowing developers to gather valuable feedback, stress-test servers, and refine the game based on player experiences. The Server Slam represents a crucial step in preparing Marathon for its debut and ensuring a smooth launch for players across all platforms.
