Background: Euvrard’s Return and Initial Roles
Vincent Euvrard, recently appointed coach of Standard Liège, has publicly addressed tensions with the club’s sporting director, Marc, revealing a breakdown in their agreed-upon division of responsibilities. Speaking to DH SPORTS +, Euvrard stated he aimed to “restore certain truths” regarding the circumstances of his return to the club.He acknowledged making mistakes but asserted that certain responsibilities assigned to him were “not correct.”
According to Euvrard, the initial agreement stipulated that Marc would handle player transfers, while Euvrard would focus on training and the team’s overall program.
Control and Interference: The Core of the Conflict
The central issue, as Euvrard describes it, was marc’s attempt to exert complete control over all aspects of the team. He stated, “Marc wanted to do everything and control everything.” Euvrard alleges that Marc consistently attended training sessions, observing his methods without offering constructive criticism.
“From the first day,Marc wanted to do everything and control everything. From the start, he was present at all training. He saw what I was doing. At no time did he come to tell me that the quality of training was not good or that the players had a concern,” Euvrard explained.
Disagreements Over Team Composition and System
The disagreements escalated to discussions about team selection. Euvrard claims Marc insisted on playing players in a specific system dictated by the transfers he had made. “We talked a lot about the composition of the team and he made me understand that he had made transfers, to play in a certain system. We had disagreements,” Euvrard said.
Euvrard emphasized his desire to contribute positively to Standard Liège, a club he holds in high regard. However, he firmly stated his unwillingness to be relegated to a subordinate role. “I wanted to come back to Standard I wanted to help this club that matters a lot to me. But I didn’t want to and I never agreed to be a puppet.”
