Margaret Elenis was born and ​raised in Glen Oaks, ‍Queens. She was the middle child of Antonios ‍elenis, 62, and Elisabeth Elenis, 61, who ran a family-owned plumbing business. After graduating from Francis Lewis High School in‍ fresh Meadows, she attended ‍Baruch College for two years, playing on the basketball team, before transferring to Queens College. There, she earned a ‍bachelor’s degree ⁤in special⁤ education.

For seven years,she taught special education and later became a dean at William Cullen Bryant High School in Astoria. In 2014, she‌ married Vasili Siklas, and they had⁤ two sons, Konstantino, ​9, ⁤and Alexandro, 4.

Battling ⁢Cancer and building a Business

At 28, nearly three years after Konstantino’s birth, Elenis Siklas was⁤ diagnosed wiht stage-two breast cancer. Remarkably, a year later, after adopting a healthier lifestyle and taking high doses of vitamins, the ‍cancer went into remission without​ chemotherapy or radiation.

This experience inspired her to create a ⁣ healthy environment for ‌children. She noticed⁣ the lack of suitable food options at her son’s favorite indoor play area. In 2020,⁤ she and her sister opened⁢ Oh My Goodness Kids in Garden City. She described it as:

Pregnancy and a Renewed Battle

In 2020, Elenis Siklas became pregnant again, but the cancer returned aggressively, leading to meaningful complications.Doctors delivered Alexandro at 30 weeks.

because I wasn’t going‍ to make it,

she told ⁢Newsday, spending a month going back and forth from the treatment center to​ the NICU. At Alexandro’s birth, she had already been diagnosed with stage‌ 4 breast cancer.

Despite​ her⁢ ongoing battle, Elenis Siklas expanded her⁤ business,‍ opening a second location in Port⁣ Washington.She introduced drop-off programs,cooking⁣ classes,and yoga for⁤ older children. Her⁢ determination was unwavering.

Yes, there’s a negative to getting cancer, but this is my‍ opportunity. I chose to pursue a path where I no I’m doing something for the future.

A Legacy of Giving

Last April, ⁢even as her health declined, Elenis Siklas established Ball4Life, a basketball fundraiser for women and mothers battling breast cancer. The second annual⁢ event is scheduled for next month. Her cousin, Irene Candela, 38, of‍ Port Washington, said:

She was a force. She had⁣ an unbreakable⁣ spirit and never‍ took no for an answer. A lot of people always talk ‌about what they want to do ​or what they wish would happen. ⁤But‍ she made‌ anything happen that she⁢ wanted to happen …She never wanted help or to⁣ accept anything from anyone. She wanted to help everyone else.

News of her passing spread‌ quickly on‍ social media. ⁣Friends and customers flooded ​Oh My Goodness Kids’ Instagram page with stories, describing her as an‍ “inspiration”⁢ and a “warrior” who uplifted the‍ community.

Elenis Siklas is survived by her⁢ husband, two children, sister, parents, and a brother, Emmanuel Elenis, 37, of Malverne, along with several in-laws. The family requests that donations be made to Ball4Life, located at 25-18 50th St. in Woodside, in lieu of flowers.Her‌ impact on the community will be remembered for years to come.
