Margot Robbie Questions Babylon’s Unexpected Lack of Popularity: What Went Wrong?
Margot Robbie Supports “Babylon” Fans
Margot Robbie recently discussed the film “Babylon” on the “Talking Pictures” podcast with host Ben Mankiewicz. Mankiewicz praised the film and asked why it did not resonate with audiences. Robbie responded, “I’m still saying that!” She expressed her love for the film and her confusion over its negative reception, saying, “I know I’m biased because I’m very close to the project… But I still can’t figure out why people really hated it.”
Despite its initial commercial failure and mixed reviews, “Babylon” has gained a dedicated audience since its release in 2022. Robbie speculated that in 20 years, people might be surprised to learn that the film did not perform well at the time, comparing it to “Shawshank Redemption,” which was also considered a failure when it was released.
Robbie reflected on her experience working with director Damien Chazelle. She admired his relentless drive for excellence, mentioning how she provided him with 51 different accents for her character, Nellie. She noted, “Damien, you just have to pick one now, this is crazy.”
Robbie is an accomplished actor and producer but expressed a desire to direct in the future. She views directing as a privilege and acknowledged that she feels she needs to earn the opportunity. Working with top directors like Chazelle, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Wes Anderson inspires her to keep acting but also fuels her passion for directing one day.
