Machado Confirms Attendance Despite political Obstacles
Maria Corina Machado, a prominent figure in the Venezuelan opposition, has confirmed she will travel to Oslo next week to except the Nobel Peace Prize. The confirmation came on December 6, 2025, according to Kristian Berg Harpviken, director of the Nobel Institute.
Security concerns surrounding Machado’s travel prevent the release of specific details regarding her arrival date adn method of transport. Harpviken stated that further details cannot be disclosed at this time.
Challenges to Participation and Political Context
Machado’s ability to attend the December 10 ceremony was previously uncertain. In November, Venezuela’s Attorney General indicated Machado would be considered a fugitive from the law should she leave the country to accept the award.
The 58-year-old opposition leader was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in October for her dedication to achieving a democratic transition in Venezuela. This recognition comes after she was barred from participating in the 2024 presidential election, which resulted in the declared victory of incumbent Nicolás Maduro – a result widely disputed by the opposition and not recognized by the United states and much of the international community.
