Mariah Carey Headlines Milano Cortina Olympics Opening Ceremony | Volare & More

Milan’s San Siro Stadium hosted more than just athletes today as the Opening Ceremony of the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics featured a performance by Mariah Carey, alongside a lineup of Italian and international stars.

Carey, known for her five-octave vocal range and a string of chart-topping hits, delivered a performance that blended international flair with her signature style. She began with a rendition of Domenico Modugno’s beloved classic, “Nel Blu, Dipinto Di Blu” – better known as “Volare” – singing in Italian. The song, a staple of Italian culture, has seen covers from a diverse range of artists including Dean Martin, David Bowie and Barry White. Carey then transitioned to a shortened version of “Nothing Is Impossible” from her recent album, Here For It All.

The ceremony wasn’t a solo showcase for Carey. Italian musical legends Andrea Bocelli and Laura Pausini also took the stage. Adding to the international flavor was a collaborative performance featuring renowned Chinese pianist Lang Lang and Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli. The lineup was rounded out by Italian-Tunisian rapper Ghali, bringing a contemporary edge to the event. Italian actors Pierfrancesco Favino and Sabrina Impacciatore also played a role in the production.

The American delegation was led by Vice President J.D. Vance, whose presence drew some attention, with the International Olympic Committee reportedly requesting fans refrain from booing him. The ceremony also saw Frank Del Duca, a bobsledder, and speed skating gold medalist Erin Jackson carry the American flag, representing the nation’s athletes.

Beyond the performances, the opening ceremony also provided a backdrop for some unexpected drama. Canadian pop star Tate McRae faced backlash from fans at home after appearing in a promotional video for Team USA. McRae responded to the criticism on her Instagram story, posting a childhood photo with the caption “y’all know I’m Canada down,” attempting to quell concerns about her allegiance.

The choice of the San Siro Stadium, traditionally a venue for Italian Serie A soccer, as the stage for the Olympic opening ceremony underscored the Games’ ambition to project a global reach. Organizers described the ceremony as “an unforgettable experience: a collective embrace weaving together Italian Spirit, innovation, emotion, and performances by world-renowned artists.”

Carey’s participation follows in the footsteps of other global music icons who have graced Olympic opening ceremonies. Celine Dion and Lady Gaga both delivered memorable performances at the 2024 Paris Olympic opening ceremony, setting a high bar for spectacle and artistry. Carey herself has a history of performing at major sporting events, having sung “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl XXXVI in and appearing at the NBA All-Star Game a year later.

The Milano Cortina Winter Olympics will continue through , with events spanning figure skating, skiing, snowboarding, and more. The closing ceremony, scheduled to take place at the historic Roman Arena in Verona, will be headlined by ballet star Roberto Bolle, bringing the Games to a fittingly artistic conclusion.

While the focus remains on athletic competition, the opening ceremony served as a cultural kickoff, blending music, performance, and national pride. The event, and Carey’s performance in particular, offered a moment of global unity and spectacle as the Winter Olympics officially began.
