The New York Yankees’ revival of Old-Timers’ day took a somber turn Saturday as legendary closer Mariano Rivera sustained an injury during the event. Initial reports suggested a hamstring issue, but fellow pitching great Roger Clemens revealed the injury may be more serious – a torn Achilles.
Yankees Restore beloved Tradition, Then Face Rivera’s Injury
For the first time since 2019, Yankee Stadium played host to the cherished Old-Timers’ Day game, bringing together beloved figures from the franchise’s storied past. The atmosphere was celebratory, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 2000 Yankees – the last team to achieve a three-peat world Series championship. However, the joy was dampened by the news of Rivera’s injury.
“It was a fun day until we heard about Mariano,” Clemens told WFAN broadcaster Suzyn waldman. “Mariano hurt his Achilles.I don’t know what was going on. We all thought it was a hamstring, but I think it’s a little worse than that. I think he’s at the hospital now. Unbelievable.”
This marks the second injury to a player during the event since 2017. Former outfielder adn current YES Network analyst Paul O’Neill strained a calf while running to first base eight years ago.
A Career Defined by Excellence and Clutch Performances
Rivera, a 13-time All-Star and the first player unanimously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019, is widely regarded as the greatest closer in baseball history. He secured a record 652 regular-season saves and an astounding 42 postseason saves throughout his 19-year career with the Yankees. He was instrumental in the team’s five World Series titles and seven American League pennants.
rivera previously suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in May 2012 while shagging fly balls during batting practice in Kansas City. He remarkably returned for his final season in 2013, continuing to dominate and cement his legacy.
Rivera’s Recent Activities and Words of Wisdom
Prior to the Old-Timers’ game, Rivera expressed his intention to speak with struggling Milwaukee Brewers reliever Devin Williams, who has faced recent difficulties on the mound. Williams has allowed nine runs in his last five appearances and 28 earned runs this season, exceeding his combined total from the previous two years.
Demonstrating his characteristic wisdom and leadership,Rivera offered words of encouragement, stating,”Can’t do nothing about it. Once it’s done, it’s done. Just learn from it, move on and be confident. You have to be confident in yourself. If you’re not confident in yourself, you’re playing the wrong sport.”
Rivera participated in the Old-Timers’ Game itself, having previously delighted fans with an inside-the-park home run during the 2019 edition. The event took place before the Yankees defeated the Houston Astros 5-4, marking their second victory against the Astros in the series.
The event also featured a video message from Yankees captain Derek Jeter, adding to the celebratory atmosphere despite the unfortunate injury to Rivera. The Yankees and baseball fans everywhere will undoubtedly be hoping for a swift recovery for the iconic closer.
