A extensive database focusing on the body size of marine organisms is shedding light on the intricate dynamics of ocean ecosystems. The Marine Organism body Size (MOBS) database, a project spearheaded by Craig McClain, compiles data on various marine groups to understand the basic role of size in the ocean.
McClain began informally collecting data on marine animal body size several years before officially launching MOBS during a sabbatical in 2022. He consolidated existing information into a unified database with a consistent format.

A meaningful hurdle was taxonomic inconsistencies. “Getting body size data for all species of octopuses, such as, was challenging as the information wasn’t readily available or up-to-date,” McClain said.The establishment of the World Register of Marine species (WoRMS) provided a solution by cataloging all marine life and assigning numerical codes to valid species. McClain linked MOBS to this coding system, ensuring easy updates as new species are identified. His team also gathered data from museum collections.
The MOBS database emphasizes body length, a linear measurement, rather than body mass. McClain noted that linear measurements are almost always included in taxonomic descriptions of new species. Weight data, however, is rare unless specifically studied.
While mammals share similar densities, marine animals vary greatly. “The carbon content of a sea slug differs considerably from that of a jellyfish, even with the same mass,” McClain said. He also pointed out the weight differences between a one-meter worm and a one-meter sea urchin. To address these issues, McClain aims to create a separate database for length-to-weight conversions.
