Marines Take on⁣ Role Protecting Federal Property in Los angeles

Updated June 14, 2025

Approximately 200 Marines have been deployed to Los Angeles to safeguard federal property and ‌personnel⁢ following‍ a‌ week of intense‌ protests sparked⁢ by federal immigration raids, according to a military‌ commander. Maj. Gen. scott Sherman, who commands Task Force 51⁢ overseeing the deployment of 4,700 troops, stated Friday the Marines completed civil disturbance training.

Sherman said the Marines⁢ would assume their protective role at the downtown Los Angeles federal building at ⁣noon. ‌”I would like to emphasize that the soldiers will not participate in ⁣law⁢ enforcement activities.Rather, ⁣they’ll be focused on ‍protecting federal law enforcement personnel,” Sherman ⁤said.

The deployment occurs after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily blocked a federal judge’s order⁤ regarding president Donald Trump‘s control of National Guard⁢ troops in⁣ California.⁢ The legal challenge arose after a federal judge⁣ deemed the Guard deployment illegal, citing violations of the Tenth⁢ Amendment and exceeding ‌Trump’s statutory authority.

The Marines will join roughly 2,000 National Guard‍ troops already present in the city since last week’s immigration raids triggered demonstrations.⁤ Recent⁣ nights have seen largely ‍peaceful protests, with ‍onyl a few arrests for failure to ⁤disperse. California‌ gov. Gavin Newsom has denounced the troop⁢ deployment as a “serious breach of state sovereignty” and a ‌power grab, pursuing legal action to halt it.

President Trump has invoked a legal provision allowing federal mobilization during⁣ “a⁢ rebellion or danger of⁤ a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United states.” The Posse Comitatus ‌Act generally prohibits active-duty forces⁢ from engaging in law enforcement activities.

Sherman clarified that National ⁤Guard⁤ soldiers at the location ‍will transition to providing protection to federal law enforcement agents,⁢ maintaining a⁤ non-law enforcement role.He noted the U.S. marine Corps’ experience in guarding ⁤U.S. embassies overseas makes them well-suited⁤ to defend ⁤a federal building.

while some National ⁤Guard troops‍ have protected immigration ‍agents during arrests, Sherman asserted, “we have had no soldier ⁣or Marine⁣ detain anyone.” The National Guard troops‌ previously protecting ‌federal property will now focus on providing protection to more federal law enforcement⁤ officials, Sherman ‍added.

States Weigh ⁣Troop Deployments

With further demonstrations ⁤anticipated, governors ‍are ‍considering their options regarding troop deployments ‍for immigration enforcement.⁤ Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, has placed 5,000 National Guard members on standby in cities with planned demonstrations. Other ‌Republican-led states have not yet announced⁤ deployment plans.

Earlier this week, a group ⁢of‍ Democratic governors issued a statement calling Trump’s deployments “an alarming abuse of power.”

arrests During Protests

Police report approximately 470 arrests since Saturday, primarily for failure to disperse. A few individuals face more serious charges, including assault against officers and possession⁢ of a Molotov ‍cocktail and a ‌gun.Nine officers sustained mostly minor injuries.

What’s⁢ next

The situation ⁣remains‌ fluid as legal challenges ‌continue and further protests are expected. The role of ⁢federal troops and the National Guard will likely ⁣remain a point of⁤ contention between the federal government and state leaders.
