Mark Cuban’s Drug Cost Message: Why It Resonates
At the Forbes Healthcare Summit last week, Mark Cuban emphasized that his company, Cost Plus Drugs, focuses on treating the “whole person plus their wallet.” He questioned whether Pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) should be handling disease management, suggesting it’s better to hire the best provider for that service.
He described Cost Plus Drugs as a “very simple business” with complete transparency: customers see the actual cost of the medication, a 15% markup, and a $5 shipping fee. He believes this simplicity and transparency leads to dramatically cheaper prices for consumers.
Cuban highlighted the chance for Cost Plus Drugs, especially now, given rising health insurance costs and the impact of new drugs like Zepbound. He also pointed out the increasing scrutiny on health insurers and PBMs regarding lack of transparency in their pricing and revenue models.
