Mark Hamill Reveals Dark Luke Skywalker Backstory for ‘The Last Jedi’
Updated June 27,2025
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” remains a divisive film among fans, sparking debate unlike any other in the Disney era. Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, publicly expressed his reservations about the character’s direction, fueling the controversy. Hamill felt Luke Skywalker’s role diverged too far from the original character.
Hamill has since expressed regret for airing his grievances publicly. He recently discussed his creative differences with director Rian Johnson on NPR’s “Bullseye with Jesse thorn” podcast. The actor revealed the darker backstory he conceived for Luke to justify his actions in the film, providing context to the creative choices and the role of the character.
Despite his initial reservations, Hamill praised Johnson as “one of the most gifted directors I’ve ever worked with,” acknowledging the director’s talent before delving into their disagreements. The backstory Hamill created offered a stark contrast to the final film.
“The fact that I went public with my dissatisfaction with the motivation for Luke becoming a suicidal hermit might have colored things in a way that maybe I shoudl have kept that to myself,” Hamill said.
“I kept saying to Rian this would just make Luke double down… he said ‘Well your whole class at the Jedi Academy were wiped out.’ I said ‘Rian, I saw entire planets wiped out. If anything Luke doubles down and it hardens his resolve in the face of uh adversity.”
He added, “Can I make up my own backstory of why he is the way he is? I don’t want to just say that you know I have bumped my head and I have brain damage.” He said, “Yeah do whatever you want.” So I made up a much, much darker uh backstory that I thought could justify him being that way.”
Hamill’s backstory involved Luke falling in love, abandoning the Jedi Order, and starting a family. The tragedy unfolds when their toddler accidentally activates a lightsaber, resulting in their death. Overwhelmed by grief, Luke’s wife takes her own life. This creative choice, Hamill believed, would explain Luke’s disillusionment.
“I thought, what could make someone give up a devotion to what is basically a religious entity, to give up being a Jedi. well, the love of a woman. So he falls in love with a woman,” Hamill explained.
“He gives up being a Jedi. They have a child together. At some point the child, as a toddler, picks up an unattended lightsaber, pushes the button and is killed instantly. The wife is so full of grief, she kills herself.”
Hamill concluded, “Despite the fact that I disagree with your choices for Luke I’m going to do everything within my power to make your screenplay work as best that I can. The only thing unfortunate about that is I’ve heard comments from fans who think that I somehow dislike Rian Johnson and nothing could be further from the truth.”
What’s next
With Hamill stating he is finished playing Luke Skywalker, the future of the character in the Star Wars universe remains uncertain.
