Mark Hamill Shuts Door on Future ‘Star Wars’ Return
Updated June 02, 2025
Mark Hamill, who debuted as Luke Skywalker in 1977, appears to be finished with the iconic role. Despite fan hopes for a Force Ghost cameo, Hamill indicated he has no plans to return to the “Star Wars” galaxy.
Speaking about his new movie, “The Life of Chuck,” Hamill expressed gratitude to George Lucas for the possibility but suggested Lucasfilm shoudl prioritize fresh narratives and characters. He portrayed Skywalker in “A New Hope,” “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Return of the Jedi,” and later as an older Jedi in “the Force Awakens.” His character met a controversial end in “The Last Jedi.”
Hamill joked about his character’s fate in “The Last Jedi,” saying, “I left my robes behind. And there’s no way I’m gonna appear as a naked force ghost.”

The actor’s reluctance to return to “Star Wars” isn’t new. He openly disagreed with the direction of Luke Skywalker in “The Last Jedi,” where the character was portrayed as a disillusioned hermit.
Hamill voiced his concerns to director Rian Johnson. “I said to Rian, I said, ‘Jedi don’t give up.’ I mean, even if he had a problem, he woudl maybe take a year to try and regroup, but if he made a mistake, he would try and right that wrong, so right there, we had a fundamental difference,” Hamill said in a 2017 interview.
To navigate filming, Hamill said he had to view Luke as “Jake Skywalker,” a different character altogether. He questioned how “the moast optimistic, hopeful character in the galaxy turn[ed] into this hermit who says, ‘It’s time for the Jedi to end’?”
Despite Hamill’s statements, some fans remain hopeful for a surprise appearance. One Reddit user pointed out Hamill’s past declarations about retiring from the role of the Joker, only to return later in “Batman: Arkham Knight.”
What’s next
While Hamill seems firm in his decision, the future of the “Star Wars” franchise remains open, with potential for new characters and stories to emerge. Some fans have suggested exploring the lives of Luke, Han, and leia in an animated series, though Hamill has not commented on this possibility.
