Mark Kerr, a veteran of 27 mixed martial arts fights, built a 15-11, 1 NC record over his 12-year career. His victories include wins against notable fighters such as Dan Bobish, Branko Cikatic, and Enson Inoue.
Kerr’s professional MMA journey began on Jan. 19, 1997, at World Vale Tudo Championship 3, where he won the heavyweight tournament by defeating all three opponents in the first round.
Six months later, Kerr debuted in the UFC at UFC 14 in Birmingham, Ala. He won the heavyweight tournament by defeating Moti Horenstein and Dan Bobish in a combined four minutes.
Kerr continued his dominance at UFC 15 in Bay St. Louis, Miss., winning his second consecutive UFC heavyweight tournament by defeating Greg Stott and Dwayne Cason in just 70 seconds.
These victories placed Kerr among an elite group of multiple UFC tournament winners, alongside UFC Hall of Famers Royce Gracie, Mark Coleman, Dan Severn, and Don Frye.
Following UFC 15, Kerr joined PRIDE Fighting Championships in Japan. Over the next three years, he won six of his first eight heavyweight bouts, earning the moniker “The Smashing machine” for his aggressive fighting style.
Kerr continued to compete in various MMA promotions for nine years before retiring in 2009. His career is chronicled in the documentary “The Smashing Machine.”
A film adaptation, also titled “The Smashing Machine,” starring Dwayne Johnson as mark Kerr, is scheduled for release by A24 on Oct. 3.
Before his MMA career, Kerr, a Toledo, Ohio, native, began wrestling at Bettendorf High School in Iowa, alongside future UFC Hall of Famer Pat Miletich. He later became an Ohio Division I state champion in 1986 while at waite High School.
Kerr wrestled collegiately at Syracuse University, winning Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association titles in 1989, 1991, and 1992.He earned all-America honors and the NCAA Division I National Championship in his final season.
