Mark Lawrenson Reveals Liverpool’s Top Goalkeeper Choice: Insights & Analysis
Caoimhín Kelleher has excelled as Liverpool’s goalkeeper while Alisson Becker recovers from injury. During Alisson’s absence, Kelleher has led the team to seven undefeated matches, achieving six wins and one draw.
Despite Kelleher’s strong performances, pundit Mark Lawrenson still regards Alisson as Liverpool’s number one goalkeeper. He believes Alisson will reclaim his starting position once he returns.
As the January 2025 transfer window approaches, Kelleher has faced speculation about leaving Liverpool for a full-time starting role elsewhere. Lawrenson doubts this will happen, stating that the club needs Kelleher for the remainder of the season.
Lawrenson commented, “I can’t see Liverpool letting Kelleher go in January. Alisson is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world, so he will be number one when he’s back.”
He noted that Kelleher’s recent success stems from reduced pressure. Early in his career with Liverpool, Kelleher struggled with mistakes, but now he plays with confidence. He is making penalty saves, improving his ball distribution, and better commanding his area.
Kelleher is in a favorable position, as clubs across Europe may show interest in him. Lawrenson mentioned that when a new goalkeeper arrives next summer, Kelleher will have options to either stay at Liverpool or transfer to another team. However, he reiterated that upon Alisson’s return, Kelleher would likely return to a backup role.
