Dublin, Ireland – A complex gun smuggling operation, allegedly involving multiple trips to Las Vegas and the offer of pipe bombs, has been substantially disrupted following the arrest and subsequent investigation of a key suspect. Detective Inspector McCartan revealed crucial details about the ring’s activities, highlighting the use of encrypted messaging apps and the suspect’s extensive criminal history.
The Investigation Unfolds: From Phone Seizure to Smuggling Ring
The breakthrough in the case came on May 24, 2024, when the suspect, identified as McCourt, was apprehended for an unrelated offense. During his arrest, his mobile phone was seized by Gardaí.this seizure proved instrumental, as data extracted from the device provided critical insights into the smuggling ring’s operations over the preceding year.”We were able to extract data from the phone shedding light on the activities of the smuggling ring in the preceding year,” Det Insp McCartan stated. The recovered information included incriminating conversations with prospective customers conducted via popular messaging platforms such as Signal, WhatsApp, and Snapchat.
Las Vegas Connection and a Shocking offer
Further investigation revealed a pattern of travel that linked McCourt and a co-accused to Las Vegas, Nevada. The pair reportedly flew to the US gambling hub on three seperate occasions in April and May of 2023.
The extent of the alleged criminal enterprise was laid bare in a chilling text message uncovered by investigators. In it, McCourt allegedly communicated with a prospective buyer, known by the alias “The Keeler,” detailing the price for a quantity of firearms.
“€75k cash is [the] best price,” McCourt reportedly messaged, adding a disturbing incentive: “I’ll throw in the 10 pipes for free.”
Det Insp McCartan expressed his professional belief regarding the nature of this offer: “It’s my belief that refers to pipe bombs.”
A History of Criminal Activity
The suspect’s alleged involvement in this serious smuggling operation is compounded by a notable criminal record. Det Insp McCartan informed the court that the defendant possesses approximately 42 previous convictions. These convictions span a range of offenses, including assault causing harm, theft, and dangerous driving, described by the detective as being “on the high end.”
The ongoing investigation aims to dismantle the entire network involved in the importation of these illicit weapons, with authorities committed to bringing all responsible parties to justice.
