Mark Williams secured a convincing 10-4 victory over Antoni Kowalski in the opening round of the 2026 World Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, advancing to the last 16 of the sport’s most prestigious tournament.

The win marks Williams’ continued presence at the elite level of snooker, as the three-time world champion looks to add a fourth title to his resume. Kowalski, making his debut at the Crucible, struggled to find consistency against the Welshman’s experienced safety play and long potting.

Williams took control early, winning the first four frames to establish a 4-0 lead. Kowalski managed to win the fifth frame with a 68 break, but Williams responded with three consecutive frames, including a 79 in the eighth, to extend his advantage to 7-1 at the mid-session interval.

After the break, Kowalski showed signs of recovery, winning frames nine and ten with breaks of 54 and 61 to reduce the deficit to 7-3. However, Williams regained momentum in the eleventh frame with a 53 break and then compiled a century break of 102 in the twelfth to make it 9-3.

Kowalski won the thirteenth frame to avoid a whitewash, but Williams closed out the match in the fourteenth with a 66 break, sealing the 10-4 victory and setting up a second-round clash against either Luca Brecel or Liam Highfield, depending on the outcome of their ongoing match.

Speaking after the match, Williams acknowledged the challenge posed by Kowalski despite the scoreline. “He’s a tough customer, especially early on,” Williams said. “He made me work for it, and I had to stay patient. Once I found my rhythm with the long balls and the safety, I was able to take control.”

Williams also reflected on his preparation and mindset entering the tournament. “I’ve been working hard in training, focusing on consistency and mental sharpness,” he said. “The Crucible is a unique venue, and you have to respect every opponent here. Getting off to a good start is important, but there’s a long way to go.”

At 50 years old, Williams remains one of the oldest competitors in the draw, yet continues to compete at a high level. His performance against Kowalski demonstrated his tactical acumen and ability to adapt during matches, particularly in the latter stages when he increased the tempo and break-building output.

Kowalski, ranked outside the top 64 and requiring a wildcard entry to reach the Crucible, gained valuable experience at football’s most iconic snooker venue. Though defeated, he showed flashes of potential, particularly in his break-building during the middle stages of the match.

Williams’ victory keeps him on course for a potential deep run in the tournament. Having previously won the World Championship in 2000, 2003, and 2018, he is seeking to become the first player to win the title in three different decades since the tournament’s move to the Crucible in 1977.

The 2026 World Snooker Championship continues over the coming days, with Williams set to face the winner of the Brecel-Highfield match in the second round. A win there would place him in the quarter-finals, where he could encounter either Judd Trump or Kyren Wilson, depending on other results in the draw.
