Ahmedabad, India – South Africa continued its dominant run at the T20 World Cup, defeating New Zealand by seven wickets on February 14th. A blistering innings from captain Aiden Markram, who finished with an unbeaten 86 off 44 balls, propelled the Proteas to victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium, securing their spot in the Super 8s.

The win marked South Africa’s fifth consecutive victory over New Zealand in T20 World Cup play. Chasing a target of 176, South Africa reached the total with 2.5 overs to spare, finishing at 178-3. Markram’s knock was highlighted by eight fours and four sixes, and included reaching his half-century in just 19 balls – the joint-fastest of the tournament so far.

Earlier, New Zealand posted 175-7 after being put into bat. Left-arm pace bowler Marco Jansen was the pick of the South African bowlers, claiming a career-best 4-40. Jansen’s early strikes significantly hampered New Zealand’s momentum, removing Tim Seifert (13), Rachin Ravindra (13), and Finn Allen (31) within the powerplay overs.

Despite a 74-run partnership between Daryl Mitchell (32) and Mark Chapman (48), New Zealand struggled to accelerate in the later stages of their innings. Jansen returned to dismiss Chapman, effectively curtailing any hopes of reaching a total exceeding 200. James Neesham contributed a late 23 not out, but it proved insufficient.

Jansen Sets the Tone with Early Wickets

Jansen’s performance was crucial in establishing South Africa’s control. His ability to generate bounce and movement troubled the New Zealand top order from the outset. The dismissal of Allen, induced by a clever slower ball, was particularly significant, halting a potentially explosive start from the Black Caps. The seamer’s three wickets in the powerplay put immediate pressure on New Zealand’s middle order.

Chapman and Mitchell attempted to rebuild the innings, but Jansen’s second spell proved equally effective. His dismissal of Chapman with a knuckleball broke the partnership and shifted the momentum firmly in South Africa’s favor. New Zealand managed only 37 runs in the final six overs, a clear indication of South Africa’s tightening grip on the game.

Markram’s Explosive Knock Seals the Victory

South Africa’s chase began with intent, reaching 83-1 after the powerplay. Markram, alongside Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton, aggressively targeted the New Zealand bowlers. Markram’s rapid half-century, achieved in just 19 balls, set the tone for the remainder of the innings.

While New Zealand attempted to stem the flow of runs, the damage had already been done. Markram continued to accelerate, consistently finding the boundary and ensuring South Africa remained well ahead of the required run rate. The Proteas captain’s innings demonstrated both power and precision, leaving the New Zealand attack with limited options.

Elsewhere in the Tournament

In Kolkata, England secured a much-needed five-wicket win over Scotland, thanks to a composed 63 not out from Tom Banton off 41 balls. Scotland had earlier posted 152, but England’s batters were able to navigate the chase successfully. The win moved England to second in Group C, behind the West Indies.

At Colombo, Ireland recorded its first win of the tournament, defeating Oman by a comprehensive 96-run margin. Lorcan Tucker’s outstanding unbeaten 94 off 51 balls powered Ireland to a tournament-high total of 235-5. Oman, in turn, were bowled out for 139, becoming the first team to be eliminated from the competition. Josh Little claimed 3-16 for Ireland.

New Zealand will look to rebound in their final Group D match against Canada, while South Africa will aim to maintain its winning form as it progresses to the Super 8s. The Proteas’ performance against New Zealand underscored their prowess and established them as a strong contender for the T20 World Cup title.
