Estrangin metro Station in Marseille to Undergo Nine-Month Renovation
marseille, France – Teh Estrangin metro station, a key stop on Line M1 serving the prefecture district, is set to begin a nine-month renovation project starting April 1, according to Régie des Transports Métropolitains (RTM). This follows similar upgrades to the Saint-Charles and joliette stations, with Noailles slated for completion in May.
Two-Phased Approach to Minimize Disruption
The RTM has announced that the Estrangin station will remain open throughout the renovation. The M1 line will continue to operate in both directions. The project will be divided into two phases:
- The frist phase will focus on the right side of the station entrance, including the installation of wall elements and false ceilings in the corridor and mezzanine.
- The second phase will involve renovating the left side, with work on the platforms primarily conducted at night.
The RTM also noted that escalators will be closed on an alternating basis during the construction.
Modernization and Enhanced Security
The renovation is part of a broader RTM program to modernize stations in anticipation of the metro’s automation later in 2025. The goal is to transform what officials described as “outdated and dark stations” into brighter, more welcoming spaces.
Catherine Pila, President of RTM, stated the upgrades will bring “much clearer tones…peaceful tones” to the station. She added, “It is indeed a question of modernization but also of security, or rather feeling of security.”

According to RTM, the renovated station will feature light tones for wall coverings and flooring, with the use of materials such as sandstone.LED lighting and improved light paths are also planned to enhance the feeling of safety. New anti-fraud fare gates will be installed.
Artistic enhancements
The RTM also plans to incorporate art into the station. Three trompe-l’oeil frescoes depicting the exterior buildings and fountain of Place Estrangin will be installed, visible from the platforms and mezzanine.
An “Anamorphosis” will offer a visual comparison of Place Estrangin during its 19th-century construction and its present-day appearance.
Light features embedded in the ceiling of the entry and exit tunnel will reveal a text meaning “foreign prefecture,” according to the RTM.
Similar renovations are planned for the Castellane and Clary stations in 2026.
