Former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle has expressed concern regarding the career trajectory of Carlos Sainz, suggesting the Spaniard may be facing a professional dead end during his second season with Williams.

Sainz joined the Grove-based team on a multi-year deal after being forced out of Ferrari at the end of 2024. The move was intended as a long-term gamble, with the driver banking on a resurgence for the British outfit under Formula 1’s new regulations.

Struggles at Williams

The reality of the 2026 season has proven sobering for both the driver and the team. Williams experienced a derailed pre-season, which included missing critical running due to failed FIA crash tests.

Reports also indicate that the team fielded a car that was well above the permitted weight limit, further hindering their competitiveness on track.

Williams has languished near the back of the grid. The team currently sits only marginally ahead of rivals such as Cadillac and Aston Martin.

While Sainz has managed to secure a small number of points, Brundle argues that the broader trajectory of the team and the driver’s position is troubling.

Limited Exit Strategies

Brundle’s primary concern is not merely the current lack of performance, but the lack of available alternatives should Sainz seek to leave the team at the end of the season.

Limited Exit Strategies

Where would Carlos go? He’s been at McLaren, he’s been at Red Bull with Toro Rosso, as it was back then. He’s been at Ferrari and Williams

Martin Brundle

Brundle points out that Sainz has already spent time at several of the sport’s major teams, which limits his options for a move to a more competitive seat.

According to Brundle, there is currently no room for him at Mercedes. He has previously completed a stint at Renault, which has since become Alpine.

This leaves the driver in a position where he may have to revisit teams where he was not invited to stay, or remain in a struggling environment with little immediate hope for improvement.

Internal Team Pressure

The external concerns regarding Sainz’s career are compounded by internal pressures at Williams. Reports indicate that the team has issued a demotion threat for the 2026 season, warning of dire consequences for both Carlos Sainz and teammate Alexander Albon.

This combination of poor machinery, a lack of external vacancies, and internal team threats has placed Sainz in a precarious position as he attempts to navigate the new era of Formula 1 regulations.
