Martin Garrix and U2 Unveil Long-Gestating Collaboration “Fireflies

Martin Garrix and U2 have released “Fireflies,” their first collaboration as a full band, marking a significant intersection of electronic and rock music. The track, unveiled via Darkroom Records, features Bono’s vocals and U2’s signature arena-rock energy blended with Garrix’s electronic production. It made its live debut during Garrix’s headlining set at Tomorrowland in Belgium, where U2 guitarist the Edge joined him onstage, according to SPIN.

The collaboration, which Garrix described as “a very unique mood” and “a special song we started working on six summers ago,” represents a milestone for both artists. While Garrix has previously worked with Bono and the Edge—such as on the 2021 UEFA anthem “We Are the People” and U2’s “Scars” from the Easter Lily EP—this is his first project with all four members of U2. “Working with the whole band gave me a glimpse of their chemistry and why U2 are who they are,” Garrix said. “They are incredible friends and collaborators.”

A Historic First

The song’s debut at Tomorrowland, one of the world’s largest electronic music festivals, underscored its significance. The Edge, reflecting on the performance, called it “a rush” and noted that the outdoor setting reminded him of his love for live music. “I might have enjoyed it a bit too much,” he said, adding, “It reminded me of why I love playing outdoors. I like it better when there’s no ceiling.”

Garrix’s involvement with U2 follows a string of high-profile collaborations.

A Broader Collaboration Landscape

The release of “Fireflies” coincides with U2’s preparations for their next album, their first new material since 2017’s Songs of Experience. The untitled album will follow two surprise EPs this year—Days of Ash and Easter Lily—which marked drummer Larry Mullen Jr.’s return to the studio after health-related hiatuses.
