The president of the Radical Civic Union (UCR), Martín Lousteau, recently led a significant political gathering in the San Telmo neighborhood of Buenos Aires. The event, attended by approximately 500 residents, underscored Lousteau’s commitment to representing his political space in the city’s upcoming elections, scheduled for May 18. This comes after the suspension of the initial election dates, which had been set earlier this year.

Lousteau’s statements come at a critical juncture in Argentine politics, as various factions within the UCR and other political parties are strategizing for the elections. Lousteau has hinted at the possibility of heading the list of Buenos Aires legislators for the UCR and is exploring alliances with socialism and the sector led by Graciela Ocaña. Meanwhile, the Civic Coalition has announced that it will run independently, while the PRO party is still finalizing its plans.

“Our space will be represented in the city,”

said Lousteau, adding, “If for fear we are going to stop saying what we think, close and dedicate ourselves to something else, so we are the only guarantee that Buenos Aires is not in the hands of the libertarians of Milei or Kirchnerism.”

During the meeting, Lousteau was accompanied by key figures, including the president and vice-president of the UCR Porteña, Martín Ocampo and Juan Loupias, respectively; the Vice Rector of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), Emiliano Yacobits; the president of the Radical Block in the Legislature, Manuela Thourte; and the national deputy Marieliel Colletta. This gathering highlighted the broad support Lousteau enjoys within the UCR and among local residents.

Lousteau emphasized his commitment to principled politics, stating, “We chose to do politics without masks and with convictions. That is why we did not hide during this hard year or made the easiest thing that everything would have been to vote for the government, from our bank in the Senate we defended what we thought it was the best for the country and the city, without care of the aggressions we suffer.”

He further elaborated, “In that sense, he stressed that his sector was shown as ‘a coherent and brave opposition,’ and added: ‘We want a society in which we can live knowing that there is a better shared society.”

Lousteau’s vision for Buenos Aires is clear: “We have a vision of the city, and we have said many times that ‘We do not like the city that builds the pro,’ There are things that do well but I think it does not deal with education, it does not deal with health.”

“As Raúl Alfonsín said on December 10, 1983: neither current cruelty, nor current immorality, nor the current claudication guarantees a happy future,”

Lousteau said and concluded paraphrasing the radical leader: “If huge is the challenge, immense must be the will.”

Lousteau’s remarks echo the sentiments of many political leaders in the U.S. who have called for a return to principled politics and a focus on core issues such as education and healthcare. In the U.S., leaders like Bernie Sanders have similarly advocated for a more equitable society, emphasizing the need for policies that benefit the majority rather than the few.

In the context of the upcoming elections, Lousteau’s stance is likely to resonate with voters who are disillusioned with the current political landscape and seek leaders who are committed to their principles and the well-being of the community. This approach is reminiscent of the grassroots movements that have gained traction in the U.S., such as the Occupy Wall Street movement, which aimed to address economic inequality and corporate influence in politics.

Before an electoral calendar that hastened the times, Lousteau analyzes fighting in the Buenos Aires territory. Evolution, as a block, has eight benches in the legislature and puts at play 3. The news is known in a strong tension in the UCR, where a sector seeks to approach freedom progresses and another does not rule out an agreement with non-Kirchner Peronism.

The former head of government of the City of Buenos Aires, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, has also announced that he will be a candidate in the legislative elections. However, he has avoided clarifying whether he will compete next May to legislator, or in October, for a bank in deputies or the Senate.

In parallel, the Civic Coalition confirmed that it will participate in the Buenos Aires elections without forming alliances and that the current deputy Paula Oliveto will head the list of space legislators. In addition, they ruled out possible agreements with Lousteau and Rodríguez Larreta. “We will compete with our identity and without ties,” they said from the party founded by Elisa Carrió.

According to the electoral schedule, the closure of alliances will be held on March 19, while the lists of candidates must be presented before March 29. Subsequently, on April 2 the payrolls will be formalized, and on April 13 the campaign in audiovisual media will begin. The electoral closure will rule since May 16, two days before the vote.

At the local level, the City of Buenos Aires will renew 30 seats in the Legislature, equivalent to half of the Buenos Aires Parliament. However, the impact of these elections exceeds the district: in October, during the national elections, 13 national deputies and three senators for the district will be at stake.
