Martin Short’s Daughter Katherine Dead at 42

February 25, 2026 Marcus Rodriguez - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Katherine Short, the daughter of actor and comedian Martin Short, has died at the age of 42. The news was confirmed on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, with representatives stating she passed away at her home in the Hollywood Hills on Monday evening.

According to a statement released by a representative for Martin Short, “It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”

Law enforcement sources confirmed to multiple outlets, including ABC News and USA Today, that a call came into Katherine Short’s address at approximately 6:43 p.m. On Monday, February 23, 2026, regarding a possible suicide. Upon arrival, authorities found a deceased female and opened an investigation. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office has determined the manner of death to be suicide, though the case remains open.

Katherine Short was one of three children adopted by Martin Short and his late wife, Nancy Dolman. While she largely maintained a private life, she occasionally accompanied her father to industry events. Dolman passed away in August 2010 after a battle with ovarian cancer, following a 30-year marriage to Martin Short.

A graduate of New York University in 2006, Katherine Short earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and gender sexuality studies. She furthered her education at the University of Southern California School of Social Work, receiving her master’s degree in 2010. She dedicated her career to the field of mental health, working as a licensed clinical social worker in private practice in Los Angeles.

Her professional focus included adoption, anxiety, depression, personality disorders, grief and loss, suicidality, and relationship difficulties. She also worked part-time at a clinic, providing community outreach, peer support, and psychotherapy, and volunteered with Bring Change 2 Mind, a charity dedicated to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health.

Martin Short has spoken publicly about the importance of family and maintaining close relationships with his children. In a 2013 interview with CNN, he emphasized the need for a supportive home environment, stating that everyone should “like each other and get along.” He credited his own upbringing with inspiring this approach.

The news of Katherine Short’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief and remembrance. While the family has requested privacy during this difficult time, the impact of her work and the warmth of her personality are being acknowledged by those who knew her. Her passing serves as a stark reminder of the often-hidden struggles individuals face with mental health, and the importance of seeking help and support.

Katherine is survived by her father, Martin Short, and her two brothers, Oliver Patrick Short, 39, and Henry Hayter Short, 36.
